Starting December 15th, The Indian Road Transport and Highways Minister has announced FASTag as one of the mandatory for all four-wheelers and must have FASTag RFID stickers affixed on their windscreen for making payments at NHAI toll plazas across India.
As per government data, 76 lakh FASTags have been sold from various platforms. On December 3rd, 2019, the highest number of digital toll tags (1,46,974) were issued.
Demand for FASTag
According to ministry, the average daily issuance of FASTags has increased by over 330%. The FASTtag issuance has become 35,000 till November from merely 8000 in July.
After an announcement of the waiver of Tag cost from November 21, the sales have swelled by over 130%. At present, 600+ toll plazas were accepting FASTag. As deadline approaching the number of FASTag tolls is also increasing rapidly.
The average daily transactions processed through FASTags have grown from 8.8 Lakh in July this year to 11.2 Lakh transactions in November. The average daily collection has grown from Rs 11.2 crore to Rs 19.5 crore for the given period.

FASTag is the Electronic Toll Collection program on toll plazas by the National Highway Authority of India. It works on the principle of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). The FASTag needs to be placed on the windscreen of the vehicle to allow the sensor at the toll plaza to read it. With the help of FASTag, vehicles do not need to stop at a toll plaza for cash transactions. As the vehicle moves in the Toll plaza, funds will automatically be deducted from their account. It allows for a continuous movement of traffic and prevents long queues.
How can you get a FASTag?
Buying a FAStag for your vehicle is very easy.
- On the purchase of a new vehicle, the dealer will sell you one by default.
- FASTags were issued by 24 certified banks through various channels.

What all documents are required to purchase a FASTag?
Need to submit a form along with a copy of the following documents and also carry the original copy of these documents for verification.
- Vehicle’s registration certificate (RC)
- Vehicle owner’s recent passport size photograph
- KYC documents (Driving license, PAN Card, Passport, Voter ID Card or Aadhar Card)
The required documents may differ depending upon the private and commercial use of the vehicle.
What are the charges for FASTag?
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) fixed a maximum of Rs. 100 for each tag for all the banks. However, the actual FASTtag price differed by the bank’s policy https://www.npci.org.in/netc

How to start using a FASTag?
In order to use the FASTag, affix the tag on the windscreen. First-time users have to sync their tag to the online wallet. For this, they have to visit the website of the bank from which the tag was purchased and follow the given steps to complete the process. After this, your FAStag is ready for use.
At a toll plaza, just drive in the dedicated FAStag lane. The scanner will scan the tag and funds will be deducted automatically from the linked wallet/bank. We can top up our wallets from our dedicated banks. You will get SMS alerts every time money is deducted from your FASTag account. Money can be added to this account with the help of net banking, credit cards and debit cards.
For limited KYC FASTag account holder:
This type of FASTag account wallet, cannot have more than Rs 20,000 in their FASTag and the monthly reload limit is also capped at Rs 20000.
For full KYC FASTag account holder:
This type of FASTag account wallet, cannot have more than Rs 1 lakh in their FASTag. There is no monthly reload cap in this account, according to the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) website

The monthly pass facility is specific to each toll plaza. You may call your Toll Free customer care to check the details and avail Monthly Pass Facility on the NHAI website.
As per the IHMCL website, “If you reside within a range of 10 km from the toll plaza, you can avail a concession on toll to be paid via your FASTag. In such a case, you need to submit the required documents – proof of residence at the bank, nearest POS location to validate that your residential address is within 10 km of a particular toll plaza. Once the address is verified, you can avail a concession on the toll which you paid through FASTag assigned to your vehicle.”
How single, double and multiple-entry charges will be calculated?
FASTag is designed to pass the benefits of round trip savings automatically. Toll charges are different for single trip and round trip.
If the round trip happens within the stipulated time, then FASTag will automatically deduct only the difference during the return trip. Each toll has a stipulated time period.
- 24 hours limit
- 12 midnight limit
- 12 noon limit.
Are FASTag works on all state and national highways?
Currently, the program is live on 600+ toll plazas across the country. FASTag can be used in all toll plazas of National highways and for a few State Highways where it has been implemented. FASTag will work on all the enabled toll plazas across the country.
What are the Discounts/cashback on FASTag use?
Currently, there is a cashback offer of 2.5% is running for all Toll payments done using FASTag and this cashback offer is valid till March-2020. The cashback amount will be credited back in the tag-linked account on a monthly basis.
How to obtain FASTag for Army/civil officers who are exempted?
These Officers can take the FASTag cards from any of the FASTag issuing banks by showing relevant proof while applying for FASTag.
Is it mandatory that, account holder and vehicle owner should be the same?
FASTag is linked to the vehicle and any account can be linked to it. The account holder should be in the blood relationship of the vehicle owner.
